For the last half century, my family has lived out a commitment to reducing the suffering of individuals and families who have been impacted by alcoholism and other drug problems. I appreciate your friendship, interest and willingness to further these efforts through your contribution to the Willingway Foundation.

 

Although alcoholism is widely recognized as a disease that can be treated with better success than most other chronic and terminal illnesses, opportunities for recovery are still hampered by stigma and old stereotypes. Willingway Foundation was chartered in 1977 as a charitable organization to further recovery by defining and disseminating the principles and methods that make the Willingway approach to recovery so successful.

 

The need for addiction recovery is greater than ever, and so many of the people who inspired us are now gone. If the achievements begun by Dot, Dr. John, and many others are to go on, it is important that we build upon them, constructing enduring initiatives to prevent addictions and enhance recovery. Continuing the important work to ensure the best recovery opportunities possible will require the partnership and support of all the people who believe in the values for which the Willingway founders stood.

 

Our recent collaboration with Georgia Southern University to establish a Center for Addiction Recovery within the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health demonstrates a momentum that will mainstream recovery principles into college life, research, and academic thought. It is essential that we continue to allow this and similar projects to thrive.

 

I am reaching out to everyone who has been touched by the work of Willingway to identify a role to play as we move toward our goal of obtaining resources for the Willingway Foundation. I am available to discuss ways you can assist, and I look forward to hearing how you want to work with us. This is the most important endeavor of my Addiction Medicine career, and I thank you for your participation.
